This neighbor from the north is thrilled with the outcome of your election. I'm mostly thrilled your country went Democrat and moved away from the fear-mongering party who made Canadians feel distrusted right from its swearing in in 2001.

I'm also thrilled that Mrs Palin was prevented from becoming VP. I didn't consider her a step forward for women or anyone else, once her religious beliefs and lack of knowledge about foreign relations became known. While I realize Mr McCain is a lot more moderate, he is over 70 years old. The likelihood was just too great he might not complete the 4 years and she would become president.

I'm thrilled that your new president is of my generation and not my parents' generation.

And it goes without saying the happiness I have for the millions of non-white Americans who now can openly dream of becoming president too.

But most of all, I'm thrilled at the voter turn out and the stories of long waits to vote that people just waited through. More people across your country felt it important to make their votes count than ever before, something we Canadians failed at just three weeks ago. The involvement inspired by this campaign is something all countries need to strive for.

It's the way election days should go.

Let's hope President-Elect Obama and VP-elect Biden live up to the majority of hopes people around the world have for them.
